Free trade - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Free trade is the unhindered flow of goods and services between countries, and is a name given to economic policies and parties supporting increases in such trade.
The relative costs, benefits and beneficiaries of free trade are debated by academics, economists, governments and interest groups.
Free trade is a concept in economics and government that refers to:

FRB: Speech, Ferguson--Free Trade: What Do Economists Really Know?--October 7, 2004
One concern about free trade may be that it has given rise to large trade and current account deficits, thereby adding to the nation's debt and putting future prosperity at risk.
Because they inhibit free trade, protectionist actions have an array of adverse consequences that one would expect: They reduce variety and raise costs for consumers; they distort the allocation of resources in the economy by encouraging excessive resources to flow into protected sectors; and they foster inefficiency by reducing the extent of competition.
Clearly, if international trade were curtailed for a much broader range of goods, the cost of living for American workers would be higher and the standard of living correspondingly lower.

 Free Trade Party (FTP)
Free trade does refer to trade that is free of taxes and legislation.
Taxes on trade, such as Income Tax and various sales taxes that are used to fund today's government services cause mind-boggling economic and social losses.

All Hail Free Trade (and Henry George) - Mises Institute
Free trade, in its true meaning, requires not merely the abolition of protection but the sweeping away of all tariffs—the abolition of all restrictions (save those imposed in the interests of public health or morals) on the bringing of things into a country or the carrying of things out of a country.
Trade is always beneficial to both parties—trade never harms one party at the expense of the other.
Trade is always to the benefit of both parties.

The new organisation was given more powers to enforce free trade rules, and a clearer mandate to promote free trade.

The high price of 'free' trade
NAFTA is a free trade and investment agreement that provided investors with a unique set of guarantees designed to stimulate foreign direct investment and the movement of factories within the hemisphere, especially from the United States to Canada and Mexico.
Thus, NAFTA and other sources of growing trade deficits were responsible for a change in the composition of employment, shifting workers from manufacturing to other sectors and, frequently, from good jobs to low-quality, low-pay work.
As the trade deficit limits jobs in the manufacturing sector, the new supply of workers to the service sector (from displaced workers plus young workers not able to find manufacturing jobs) depresses the wages of those already holding service jobs.

Free Trade without the WTO (December 1999)
Free trade is simply the ability of people to trade freely with one another.
To advance freedom, free trade and higher standards of living for us, the American people should require the U.S. government to unilaterally repeal U.S. tariffs, import quotas, and other trade restrictions.
The corollary principle then is that whenever government interferes with the ability of people to trade with each other, people's standard of living is lowered.

 John Kerry on Free Trade
The mission of the Cato Institute Center for Trade Policy Studies is to increase public understanding of the benefits of free trade and the costs of protectionism.
Scholars at the Cato Trade Center aim at nothing less than changing the terms of the trade policy debate: away from the current mercantilist preoccupation with trade balances, and toward a recognition that open markets are their own reward.
I will order an immediate 120-day review of all trade agreements to ensure that our trading partners are living up to their labor and environment obligations and that trade agreements are enforceable and are balanced for America's workers.

CAFTA: More Bureaucracy, Less Free Trade by Rep. Ron Paul
Free trade occurs in the absence of government interference in the flow of goods, while CAFTA represents more government in the form of an international body.
Hundreds of tax bills languish in the House Ways and Means committee, while the one bill drafted strictly to satisfy the WTO was brought to the floor and passed with great urgency last year.
Labor and environmental rules are inherently associated with trade laws, and we can be sure that CAFTA will provide yet another avenue for globalists to impose the Kyoto Accord and similar agreements on the American people.

A trade deficit is not a threat to America’s economic well-being.
While there are inevitable short-term transition costs in some sectors of the economy, the long-term benefits of free trade for all far outweigh such costs..
Trade deficits do not arise from unfair trade barriers abroad or uncompetitive industries at home, but from a net inflow of foreign capital.

Trade may be balanced in Chapter 2; but Chapter 13 explains that the trade balance is equal to the difference between savings and investment, and that a country may justifiably run persistent deficits if it is an attractive site for foreign investment.

And even if national income rises as a result of trade, the distribution of income within a country may shift in a way that hurts large groups.

The WTO and Free Trade - Global Issues
The effect of the 20 year period of a patent protection is to basically deny others (such as developing countries and their corporations) from developing alternatives that would be cheaper.
The Multilateral Agreement on Investment (MAI) was one such example of a trade and investment related treaty which would emphasize the ability for corporations to be allowed more freedom and less constraints.
TRIPS aims to prevent imitation of products (which is ironic, given that this would allow further competition and better prices for drugs and other products, which is something that transnational corporations have often sung as being the benefits of free trade and corporate-led capitalism with minimal restrictions).
