Opportunity cost - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The consideration of opportunity costs is one of the key differences between the concepts of economic cost and accounting cost.
Opportunity cost is a term used in economics to mean the cost of something in terms of an opportunity forgone (and the benefits that could be received from that opportunity), or the most valuable forgone alternative.
In the case where there is no explicit accounting or monetary cost (price) attached to a course of action, ignoring opportunity costs may produce the illusion that its benefits cost nothing at all.

 Cost and Production
Accounting cost measures are used in the evaluation of managerial performance (usually together with information on income) and as a basis for economic cost estimation.
You should ignore costs that will not vary as a result of your decision; you should include all costs that will vary as a result of your decision.
Nevertheless, where economists and accountants are concerned, there is a second and equally critical source of confusion about costs: economists and accountants use the term "cost" to mean different although related things.

 Cost estimators
Cost estimators develop the cost information that business owners or managers need to make a bid for a contract or to decide whether a proposed new product will be profitable.
Construction cost estimators also may be employed by the project’s architect or owner to estimate costs or to track actual costs relative to bid specifications as the project develops.
The estimator then compares the cost of purchasing parts with the firm’s cost of manufacturing them to determine which is cheaper.

FactCheck.org Kerry Exaggerates Cost of War in Iraq
Strictly speaking, the war itself -- just the military operations -- has cost less than half of what Kerry says as of the end of this month (which is also the end of the current fiscal year, FY 2004) according to the Congressional Budget Office.
However, that figure is too low because it doesn't count the cost of reconstructing Iraq, which should be included in any accounting of the total cost of the war.
Kerry would be correct to say the cost of the war in Iraq "is now $120 billion and counting." He would be well within the bounds of argument to say "this war will cost $200 billion," by some unspecified date in the future.
