Wage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A wage is the amount of money paid for some specified quantity of labour.
Several countries have enacted a statutory minimum wage rate in an attempt to prevent the (some say supposed) exploitation of low-paid workers.
The Fair Labor Standards Act requires a minimum wage at the Federal level although states and cities can and sometimes do set their own higher minimum.

Minimum wage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The costs and benefits arising from minimum wages are subject to considerable disagreement among economists, though the consensus among economics textbooks is that minimum wage laws should be avoided whenever possible as the costs exceed the benefits.
The traditional view that minimum wages have significant negative effects on employment is straightforward if one assumes that labor markets for low-skill workers can be characterized as fitting the model of a perfectly competitive market, where the only role of wages is as a cost.
If they exist, it is clear that some of the adverse effects can only occur when minimum wages are implemented and successfully enforced by government fiat: either these effects are a consequence of the cost of wage regulation or they do not exist.

 Living Wage Overview
With an average wage of $11.25 per hour without health benefits ($9.95 with health benefits), more than double the current federal minimum wage, these ordinances are being adopted at a rate of one every month.
The calculations shown here suggest that instead of higher wage minimums, poor families would benefit more from expanded opportunities to work at their current wage level and from policies that encourage family cohesion and formation of extended family and multi-family households to increase the ratio of earners to non-earners in low income households.
Workers who were earning higher wages before the ordinance was passed may learn that their past efforts to improve their skills was wasted investment.

If a minimum wage is introduced into this labor market, the labor supply curve effectively becomes horizontal at this wage up to the point at which the minimum wage intersects the supply curve.
