World Trade Organization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
All WTO members are required to grant one another most favoured nation status, such that (with some exceptions) trade concessions granted by a WTO member to another country must be granted to all WTO members (WTO, 2004c).
The WTO promotes economic globalization and free trade, which some consider problematic.
The GATT principles and agreements were adopted by the WTO, which was charged with administering and extending them.

WTO World Trade Organization: WTO / GATT Home page
The WTO's purpose is to broaden and enforce global free trade.
Expanding these corporate powers--as the WTO intends to do in Seattle and beyond--will further cripple governments and make them even less able to protect their citizens from the ravages of those entities whose only aim is to grow richer and richer and richer.
If the WTO succeeds in Seattle, local and national governments will be less able to protect themselves against corporate policies, or to enact their own policies where these do not further free trade.

But since the WTO was created, its members have not been able to agree on the scope of a new round of trade talks.
The WTO provides a permanent arena for member governments to address international trade issues and it oversees the implementation of the trade agreements negotiated in the Uruguay Round of trade talks
For the last decade, Americans have not been able to find common ground on the turf of trade policy and how to ensure that trade agreements such as those enforced by the WTO don't thwart achievement of other important policy goals.

 World Trade or World Domination?
To give the expanded rules lasting power, the WTO was established in 1995 to enforce existing trade agreements and serve as a central clearinghouse through which trade relations between countries could be handled.
In 1996, at the Singapore Ministerial, WTO member governments declared that the issue of international labor standards fell into the purview of the United Nations' International Labor Organization.
Thousands of trade ministers and other government officials, including President Clinton, are expected to attend the meeting, which will set the agenda for a new three-year round of international trade negotiations.

Global Exchange : Top Reasons to Oppose the WTO
The policies of the WTO impact all aspects of society and the planet, but it is not a democratic, transparent institution.
WTO rules have hastened these trends by opening up countries to foreign investment and thereby making it easier for production to go where the labor is cheapest and most easily exploited and environmental costs are low.
The WTO's "most favored nation" provision requires all WTO member countries to treat each other equally and to treat all corporations from these countries equally regardless of their track record.

Public Citizen WTO - World Trade Organization - World Trade Organization (WTO)
The WTO is one of the main mechanisms of corporate globalization.
Decisions affecting the economy are to be confined to the private sector, while social and environmental costs are borne by the public.
Established in 1995, the World Trade Organization (WTO) is a powerful new global commerce agency, which transformed the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) into an enforceable global commerce code.

The WTO and Free Trade - Global Issues
Pro China entry into the WTO and NTR status in the US is basically from the business community who see the large population of over a billion as more consumers to buy and consume products.
The effect of the 20 year period of a patent protection is to basically deny others (such as developing countries and their corporations) from developing alternatives that would be cheaper.
GATS is similar to the multilateral agreement on investment, except that it is withing the WTO.

The World Trade Organization - Social and Economic Policy - Global Policy Forum
While rich countries want the WTO rules to be “the Constitution for a single global economy”, poor countries expect the WTO to deal with trade in a way that benefits all nations.
Shiva believes that WTO reform should prioritize the importance of food security in poor countries, and advocates tariff increases for poor countries in the face of rich countries’ dumping practices.
European governments use the WTO agreement on trade in services (GATS) to serve the interests of their national water corporations, says the Heinrich Böll Foundation.

The two-day (March 18 and 19) WTO moot of G-20 countries in New Delhi has demanded a time frame from the rich countries to end subsidies to their farmers and terminate price distorting export practices to bring equity between the developed and developing nations.
All the government departments/agencies, autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies should quickly realign to make a comprehensive plan to cope with the challenges of WTO to be enforced from January 2005.
World Trade Organisation (WTO) states resumed efforts on Sunday to break a deadlock over cheap medicines for poorer countries, but officials saw no quick fix for a dispute souring the mood at global trade talks.

World Trade Organization (WTO) - Trade IISD
As well, the WTO has been gradually moving to extend its authority into non-trade areas of domestic policy relevant to sustainable development, such as intellectual property rights, investment, services and competition policy.
IISD devotes particular focus to the World Trade Organization and the multilateral trade regime that it administers, exploring the wider policy externalities of its trade rules and of WTO negotiations in new areas such as services, environment and agriculture.
The WTO not only sets rules which circumscribe the way environmental policies may be formulated, but it also embodies more general rules which guide the flow of trillions of dollars of economic activity across the borders of the world—activity that has enormous potential to frustrate or foster sustainable development.

 Seattle WTO apology
When the conference started, we began to see signs of unrest when anti WTO banners began being hoisted as well as banners blasting the working labor practices of several big business retailers such as The Gap and Nike.
Many of these delegates and leaders will remember the events in Seattle vividly when business and government from our state attempts to negotiate in business negotiations or partnerships.
The organizations opposed to the WTO should openly condemn the environmental and social problems of several of the member nations of the organization, but they also should ENCOURAGE the continuation of free trade with these nations, as the wealth effect it generates will lead to a more educated and sophisticated society.

In addition, the WTO system, rules and procedures are undemocratic, untransparent and non-accountable and have operated to marginalize the majority of the world's people.

WTO APPELLATE BODY CONDEMNS THE "BYRD AMENDMENT" - THE US MUST NOW REPEAL IT
Offset payments constitute a remedy in addition to the imposition of an anti-dumping or anti-subsidy duty, and this remedy is not envisaged in the WTO legislation.
Once dumping or subsidisation has been established, the offset payments flow automatically and confer a competitive advantage to the US industry, which may be eliminated only if dumping or subsidisation has first ceased.
US government to distribute the collected anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties to the US companies that brought the cases in the first place, is incompatible with WTO rules.

But critics argue most of the planet's population will not benefit from WTO actions and may, in fact, be harmed by them.
"The WTO is going to write the framework that will dictate how global commerce is done and our problem is that the vast majority of people in the world (have no representative to speak on their behalf at the Seattle conference)," said Chuck Collins, co-director of United for a Fair Economy.
