Topic: UK General Strike of 1926

 General Strike
On the 11th May, at a meeting of the Trade Union Congress General Committee, it was decided to accept the terms proposed by Herbert Samuel and to call off the General Strike.
The leaders of both the Trade Union Council and the Labour Party were unhappy about the proposed General Strike, and during the next two days frantic efforts were made to reach an agreement with the Conservative Government and the mine-owners.
The method was to hold the Government and the nation up to ransom.

UK General Strike of 1926 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Government had prepared for the strike over the nine months in which it had provided a subsidy, creating organisations such as the organisation for the maintenance of supplies, and did whatever it could to keep the country moving.
The report also recommended that the Government subsidy should be withdrawn and that the miners' wages should be reduced in order to save the industry's profitability.
Churchill (at that time minister of finance) said in his newspaper British Gazette : " I do not agree that the TUC have as much right as the Government to publish their side of the case and to exhort their followers to continue action.

Earlier this year, The Daily Telegraph revealed that based on actuaries' assessment, funding the generous public sector pensions regime would cost taxpayers nearly £700 billion in a few decades' time.
