Asia Times Online :: Global Economy
The US fiscal and trade deficits are skyrocketing and wage compensation as a share of national income has hit a 40-year low.
Adding to the US dollar's woes, no less than Alan Greenspan now warns that the party may be over for the greenback as foreign investors tire of paying for the United States' uncontrollable fiscal deficit and want to shift to other currencies at some point.
Post-Katrina, the US economy is conducting a cliff-walk, dependent on even stronger government stimuli to hold up consumer spending.

 The stagnating US economy
US capitalism is burdened with huge overcapacity and mountains of debt, and the anaemic state of the world economy offers no easy way out.
The slight growth in the economy was entirely due to wholesalers maintaining their inventory levels after more than a year of cutting their stockpiles.
A surge in oil prices in the event of a US strike against Iraq, together with extra war expenditure (when the Federal budget is moving sharply into deficit, mainly because of Bush’s tax cuts to the rich and generally declining revenues) would be additional negative economic forces.

 The US Economy 2,000+
While fiscal spending is good for the economy, it is going to have a major negative impact on future deficits and on the value of the dollar.
A new REIT for us is American Financial Realty Trust (ticker: AFR), which buys bank real estate, helping to reduce the overhead of banks and improve their balance sheets.
US sovereign bonds have also underperformed most of their global counterparts; year-to-date returns of 1.7% on 10-year Treasuries have fallen far short of above 9% returns for German bunds and emerging market debt.

Guardian Unlimited Special reports US 'endangering world economy'
The US is facing a record-breaking budget deficit, expected to exceed $400bn (£222bn) this year and the IMF urged Washington to get its house in order by raising taxes and cutting spending.
Debt is expected to reach 40% of the US economy, which the report described as "an unprecedented level of external debt for a large industrial country" that would push up global interest rates and slow growth.
The International Monetary Fund last night warned that the gaping US budget deficit, ballooning trade imbalance and falling dollar were posing a serious threat to the health of the global economy.

EH.Net Encyclopedia: US Economy in the 1920s
More countries' economies began to decline in 1929, including the United States, and by 1930 a depression was in force for almost all of the world's market economies.
Contrary to simple macroeconomic models that argue a federal government budget surplus must be contractionary and tend to stop an economy from reaching full employment, the American economy operated at full-employment or close to it throughout the twenties and saw significant economic growth.
In this case, the surpluses were not contractionary because the dollars were circulated back into the economy through the purchase of outstanding federal debt rather than pulled out as currency and held in a vault somewhere.

World economy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The US economy continued its remarkable sustained prosperity, growing at 4.1% in 1999, and accounted for 21% of GWP.
The terrorist attacks on the US on September 11, 2001 accentuate a further growing risk to global prosperity, illustrated, for example, by the reallocation of resources away from investment to anti-terrorist programs.
The euro as the common currency of much of Western Europe in January 1999, while paving the way for an integrated economic powerhouse, poses economic risks because of varying levels of income and cultural and political differences among the participating nations.

 [A-List] US economy: energy crisis
US natural gas futures prices point to higher prices for almost the next two years, darkening the clouds over the world's largest economy that is already faced with the threat of deflation, widening deficits and rising unemployment.
Volatility of natural gas may scorch a US recovery By Kevin Morrison Financial Times; Jun 13, 2003 If futures prices are any indication, then the US economy is in for another bruising.
The latest weekly inventory report by the US government's energy watchdog, the Energy Information Administration, shows US natural gas storage at almost three-quarters of the five-year average for this time of year.

Asia Times - The IMF and the US economy
The US imported $121.4 billion in goods from Japan in 2002, $125.2 billion from China, $33.6 billion from South Korea, $32.2 billion from Taiwan and $9.6 billion from Hong Kong.
As US Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan ordered a series of rate cuts that drove interest rates to their lowest levels since World War II, millions of homeowners, motivated by rising house prices and plummeting interest rates, refinanced their homes, took the money out and have been spending it on consumer goods.
After the budget deficit, probably the most pressing of these questions concerns the possibility that a US housing bubble, if there is one, might pop with an explosion equal to the one that collapsed world equity prices.

 US foreign economy
The U.S. is one of the most open economies in the world and generally places few restrictions on foreign investment.
These trade deficits pose a serious threat to U.S. economic stability, and at this perilous point in U.S. history, even devout believers in free trade owe it to the nation to look closely at this piling on of foreign debt.
OECD countries, however, broadly share U.S. values in these areas and the OECD has a long tradition of dealing with environmental and labor concerns.

Hopes of a full recovery in the US economy were also dampened last week with the Federal Reserve's Beige Book saying consumer spending and the service sector in general remain lacklustre.
The measure of consumer confidence was down to 87.2 in June from 92.1 in May, despite analysts' expectations of a moderate increase.
The Conference Board index - a key measure of leading US economic indicators - rose 1% in May.

IMF economists also cautioned that one should add to the short term a US$500 billion deficit that the US administration is running, a further US$47 trillion in unfunded long-term commitments for US Social Security and the federally funded Medicare health program for the elderly and indigent.
So its double act with the US - both the seller of consumer goods on a huge scale and the financer for US' purchase makes it even more important.
And the IMF pointed out that there were additional liabilities from cash-strapped local governments, forced to borrow to compensate for federal cutbacks.

How the War Machine is Driving the US Economy
The war has been a large part of the justification for the Bush administration to run ever-widening budget deficits, and those deficits, predicated largely on military spending, have in turn pumped money into the economy and provided the stimulus that low interest rates and tax cuts, on their own, could never achieve.
The corollary of the Reagan military boom was a sharp cutback in social spending, something that was not reversed under Bill Clinton and is now back on the agenda with George Bush.
Military expenditure is usually the least effective of short-run ways of spending money, because it doesn't build infrastructure that give you returns over time.

The problem, now, compared to previous recoveries in the US is that China in the manufacturing sector and that India for tradable services will continue to gain employment market share at the cost of US employment and also lead to a worsening of America's trade and current account deficit.
There are several reasons why it is likely that the US economy will weaken far more than is expected by the bullish Wall Street crowd, whose only interest is to get as many investors to invest in the stock market and then to churn the accounts in order to earn high commissions.
What we, therefore, find at the present time is that US inventories of new homes for sale are at a record because, in recent months, housing starts have been rising at a far higher rate than new home sales.

China's military, which has enjoyed double-digit budget increases for much of the past 15 years, is likely to grow larger, bolstered by the huge economy.
Some economists argue that to sustain long-term growth, market economies require political freedom -- something the communist government shows scant intention of bestowing.

What is commonly known as the "U.S. dollar," represents a debt that is owed by the U.S. federal government, to the federal reserve bank.
Under the welfare reform act, many Americans are being put to work for private companies for no wages other than the cost of their food and shelter, both of which constitute the bare minimum requirements of survival.
The "federal reserve notes" that are in your wallet, and your bank account, aren't really money, but are actually only paper on a debt that can never be paid, not even by combining all the assets and labor of every American alive today.

Nervous that the war would hurt their sales, many businesses froze hiring and cut their investment budgets in the run-up to the US-led attack on Iraq, now in its third week.
Yet an increasingly bleak jobs picture might keep them wary of spending too freely, which in turn would deprive the economy of a strong engine for growth.
