Floating currency - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A floating currency is contrasted with a fixed currency.
A floating currency is a currency that uses a floating exchange rate as its exchange rate regime.
From 1946 to the early 1970s, the Bretton Woods system made fixed currencies the norm; however, in 1971, the United States government abandoned the gold standard, so that the US dollar was no longer a fixed currency, and most of the world's currencies followed suit.

One was the replacement of the requirement of full rand backing of the Lesotho currency (the loti, introduced in 1980) with equivalent reserve holdings in the form of rand assets and convertible foreign currencies in such proportions as the Central Bank of Lesotho considered appropriate.
A common currency area among closely related countries could be expected to reduce the cost of currency conversions and uncertainty about exchange rate fluctuations; it should consequently enhance the allocative efficiency of the relevant economies.
On 14 February 1961, when the rand took over from the pound as the basic unit of account in South Africa, the gold parity of the rand was fixed at 50 per cent of the value of the old South African pound, i.e.

About That Trade Deficit (Dec 2004)
The dollar is valued by foreigners because it is a form of hard currency, along with the euro, the pound and the yen.  The United States is in the hard currency export business—or, to put it more subtly, the export of hard currency services.
Hard currency is a physical good—banknotes and coins—but as a physical good per se it is unimportant and worthless.  The currency-holders benefits from a number of services provided by the issuer of the currency, the US government.
In any market (and there is a market for hard currency as for other goods), prices result from an interaction of supply and demand.

Complementary currencies are created to deal with issues that the conventional money (US$, Euro, Sterling Pound and JPY for instance) are hardly able to solve, such as the concentration of wealth to few people, sustainable and autonomous regional development, economic cycle and difficulty for eco-friendly long-term projects to be invested.
Complementary currencies are all currencies other than scarce national currencies that we practice everyday.
The complementary currencies that exist today have been created in order to supplant national currencies when those fail in their medium of exchange function, and they cannot replace national currencies in all their functions.

Pound Scots was the national unit of currency in the Kingdom of Scotland before the country entered into a political union and currency union with the Kingdom of England in 1707 (see Acts of Union 1707).
Despite the Scottish Pound no longer being an independent currency, Scotland's three largest national clearing banks, the Royal Bank of Scotland, the Bank of Scotland and the Clydesdale Bank, still print paper Pound Sterling notes for domestic circulation within the United Kingdom, although in practice they are little seen outside Scotland.
However, it declined in value at a greater rate than the English currency, such that, at Union, the conversion rate was 12 Pounds Scots = 1 Pound Sterling.
