Philippine peso - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some argue that the only way to return confidence in the Philippine peso is to return to the gold standard or an equivalent.
The amount of an old gold one peso coin would be (per definition 12.9 grains of pure gold), would now cost P642 on the international commodities markets.
Many Filipinos perceive the peso's value in relation to the US dollar and tend to blame whatever regime is in power for the worsening exchange rate.

COLUMN:  PHILIPPINE  PESO ... THE STRONGEST CURRENCY IN ASIA
As for investors, they should be looking at investing in Philippine assets (the peso, ROPs, equities) now that we are on the path towards a balanced budget by 2008… not when everything is rosy by 2009.
However, the peso remains strong, Philippine bonds are resilient and the capital accounts positive.
The strong balance of payments and capital accounts is another major reason for the peso appreciation.

Collapse of the Philippine peso: Who's the culprit?
If the Philippine exchange rate does not stabilise in the next few months (that is, if the foreign currency reserves continue to deplete), it may be a signal that the financial vultures are preparing to ship their money back to their base or to other profitable ventures outside the country.
Already awash with dollars they had acquired previously, and disposing of billions of pesos to propel another rise in the value of the dollar, the financial speculators gained windfall profits by the end of the day.
The economic strategy of the Philippine government under the leadership of “Steady Eddie” (the Australian media's endearing term for President Ramos) revolves around procuring the precious dollar, even if that attracts more financial vultures to prey on the country's economy.
