Monetary union - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A monetary union differs from an Economic and monetary union, where it is not just currency but also economic policy that is pooled or co-ordinated (as in the European Union Eurozone, for instance).
In economics, a monetary union is a situation where several countries have agreed to share a single currency among them, for example, the East Caribbean Dollar.
One other country and two other subnational entities use the euro but are not licensed to issue any euro coins or notes.

Stage 3 is defined as the ultimate stage of economic and monetary union wherein the currencies of the participating EU countries are irrevocably locked and replaced by a single currency, the euro.
If much weight is placed on their monetary control function, the reserve requirement ratio (the ratio of banks' required reserves held at the NCB to banks' deposit liabilities) should be non-negligible, and the reserves should not be fully remunerated.
The Maastricht Treaty on European Union states that members of the European Union (EU) should decide before the end of 1996 whether the majority of member countries meet the specified convergence criteria to start Stage 3 of the Economic and Monetary Union and whether it is appropriate to enter Stage 3.

 Benjamin J. Cohen
Since monetary union is by definition an economic matter, it seems only natural to focus attention mainly on economic considerations-the material costs and benefits associated with a merger of separate national monies into one.
Most relevant are the direct political benefits of monetary sovereignty, all of which are likely to be compromised by the creation of a common currency.
A second benefit of a national currency is seigniorage--the capacity a monetary monopoly gives national governments to augment public spending at will.

Does Europe Need a Monetary Union?
When a monetary union establishes a central fiscal authority with its own budget, then the larger the size of this budget, the higher the degree of fiscal harmonisation (MacDougall Report, 1977).
The moral of this is that the central bank of a monetary union can operate disparate monetary policies in the different partner countries without compromising their internal and external equilibria, a severe blow to those who stress the costs from monetary integration (El Agraa, 1990).
The final section suggests some urgent measures that need to be taken in the transition to inevitable monetary union and concludes that the rationale for a single currency as a corollary of a single market derives to a large extent from political economy considerations.

Does Europe's Path to Monetary Union Provide Lessons for East Asia? (2005-19, 8/12/2005)
In Europe, a monetary union was achievable primarily because it was part of the larger process of political integration.
Related to this third benefit, however, is the principal cost of joining a monetary union—by delegating authority for monetary policy to a regional central bank, an individual country's central bank loses independent monetary policy control and, therefore, the ability to stabilize the economy when it is hit by a shock.
Joining a monetary union can benefit a country's economy in a number of ways.
