Topic: Mondragon

 Communitarian Economics
Mondragon sees itself as a political as well as economic entity, and its perspective is that of struggle for equity and dignity.
Mondragon is highly organized, structured and efficient, but its purpose is to serve its members, not profits.
In fact there are 109 Mondragon enterprises in finance, manufacturing, retail sales, and information services.

Mondragon: Keeping in Order to Give More
Lacking a stream of constant, profit-seeking investors, the Mondragon Co-operative Corporation, faced a severe financial crisis during the waning months of 1959; the co-operatives themselves were forbidden by law to use what little property they possessed as collateral in loans, and often faced difficulties purchasing new equipment and hiring managers.
This is reflected in economic studies of Mondragon, which state that the co-operatives are 7.5% more efficient than equivalent large businesses, and forty percent more effective than small and medium-sized businesses.
Spanish business remains extremely sensitive to fluctuations in the economy, and Mondragon is no exception; nevertheless, in times of economic recession the Basque co-operatives tend to have lower unemployment figures than capitalist enterprises.

Reviews / Comptes Rendus Labour/Le Travail, 53 The History Cooperative
Mondragon has become the equivalent of a General Motors in the Basque region through intense work, technical leadership, loyalty to the people of the region, and the desire to be world-class in a globalized economy.
The Mondragon co-operative system that the author studied in the 1990s was started in the 1950s (with roots in the 1940s) as a small manufacturing business that has grown into a variety of worker co-ops, educational institutions, a large bank and assorted consumer co-ops, including a large grocery chain.
This may be a departure from original principles at Mondragon but the payment of market-competitive salaries to managers in co-operative enterprises of various kinds anywhere in the world is commonplace.

University of Wisconsin Center for Cooperatives - The Negotiation of Values in the Mondragon Worker-Cooperative Complex
They have a strong identification with the Mondragon Valley and with their local community They are not, however, well connected to or appreciated by the upper management of the corporation, and the group has not been well integrated into the corporation's planning for the future.
During the 1990s, however, the Mondragon Cooperative Corporation has been moving away from its traditional, regional sectors toward reorganization on the basis of industrial sectors This development is rationalized principally on the basis of economic efficiency: specifically, in terms of grouping coops with similar product or service markets.
These and all other parts of the system are cooperative in two senses: economically, in that all worker-members are also owners (there still is no outside stock held); and socially, in that each co-op is governed by a complex system of direct and representative democracy (along with governance by a congress of all co-ops).

In 1958 the founders of Mondragon encountered a crisis when the Spanish government deemed the coop members to be self-employed, and hence ineligible for government social security and unemployment benefits.

There coop managers agreed that their enterprises were on a collision course with multinationals because of the type of products they made and considered how to get out of the way.

Fourthly, the relationship between the Mondragon primary co-operatives and the CLP and its counterpart secondary support co-operatives, such as Ikerlan, demonstrates the strengths that accrue from measures formalising and reinforcing the inter-dependence of businesses and their sources of goods and services.
Secondly, Mondragon demonstrates the uses of credit unions and other mutualist financial intermediaries as a means of bringing about local and regional economic development.
Here again, the Mondragon experience should be an incentive for enacting legislation empowering credit unions to make loans for non-traditional purposes, without sacrifice of their capacity to comply with stringent prudential requirements.
