CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Labour and Labour Legislation
While the labourers of Athens who were citizens participated to some extent in the affairs of government, they do not seem to have obtained any legislation for the benefit of labour.
The old legislation fixing wages, and requiring a seven-year's period of apprenticeship, was abolished in 1813 and 1814, and nothing was substituted for the protection of the labourer.
It was not, however, the purpose of this rescript to benefit the labourer.

Manual labour - definition of Manual labour in Encyclopedia
In ancient times, the status of manual laborers was low, as most physical labor was done by slaves.
Manual labor is a term used for hard physical work done with the hands, especially in an unskilled manual job such as fruit and vegetable picking, et cetera.
This continued into the Feudal period, where skilled laborers were seen as artisans, and could aspire to become influential citizens.

 ipedia.com: Yuri Gagarin Article
While manual labourers are described in official reports as "peasants", this is somewhat of an exaggeration; his mother was reportedly a voracious reader, and his father a skilled carpenter who did not advertise his abilities to avoid the wrath of Stalin's purges against the "kulaks".
The third of four children, his elder sister helped to raise him while his parents worked.
Gagarin was born near Gzhatsk, and his parents worked on a collective farm.
