Labour economics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Many economists have thought that, in the absence of laws or organizations such as unions or large multinational corporations, labour markets can be close to perfectly competitive in the economic sense — that is, there are many workers and employers both having perfect information about each other and there are no transaction costs.
This is because in competitive markets price is equal to marginal revenue, and marginal revenue product is defined as the marginal physical product times the marginal revenue from the output (MRP = MPP * MR).
Labour economics looks at the suppliers of labour services (workers), the demanders of labour services (employers), and attempts to understand the resulting pattern of wages, employment, and income.

ILO - Ageing and labour markets for older workers - Alexander Samorodov
It is in the developed market economies, in particular, with their advanced systems of social security and protection, that demographic problems give rise to economic issues as public finances are stretched to support the elderly.
The interests of older workers in labour markets should be treated on an equal basis with those of other disadvantaged groups, such as young workers, newcomers to the labour market, women, or workers with disabilities.
Discussion of this issue is relevant to the present paper to the extent that labour market implications are involved.

Labour that is required tends to be more skilled and the high costs of labour can often be covered by the profit generated from an efficient plant.
Earlier it was thought the market was divided into a primary labour market and a secondary labour market.

 GaWC Research Bulletin 139
Both Beaverstock (1996) and Hanlon (1994; 1999) agree that the expansion in the total global professional labour markets for large accounting firms was the key to their success in globalisation during the latter quarter of the Twentieth Century.
In all cases, the global professional labour markets of the major pan-regional offices within these firms, were characterised by managing-, senior- and junior- partners, and post-qualified staff and trainees of many nationalities.
Global professional labour markets are produced within the transnational firm as an organisational strategy to deliver transnational knowledge management.

Publications and Research - Speeches - 2003 20 November - Bank of Canada
The labour share of income rose sharply in the early 1990s when profits fell during the recession and payroll taxes rose.
For example, there were reforms to labour market institutions such as changes to the Unemployment Insurance program.
When the share of labour income in GDP is unchanged, we would expect growth in labour income to be close to the projected growth in nominal GDP.

 Flexible Labour Markets
There is no consensus on this answer, some economists believe that the labour market flexibility has led to an increase in wage inequality but other analysts argue that continued low levels of unemployment and inflation are testimony to a better performance.
By ensuring that firms do not have to pay high social security payments and national insurance contributions, and are not excessively penalized for dismissing workers during a downturn or recession, the UK has encouraged a flexible labour market.
This can be seen in the expansion of performance related pay (where some part of the total pay (remuneration) package is linked to productivity, company profits or other indicators of performance.

OECD Economic Outlook: Labour markets and inflation - Domestic and International Developments; OECD economic outlook ...
In Japan, labour income was boosted by substantial bonuses paid from buoyant corporate profits.
In some instances, however, the deterioration has been rather clear-cut; in the United States, for example, corporate profits (excluding the inventory valuation adjustment, and when compared with the corresponding quarter of the preceding year) have been declining since the second quarter of 1989.
Corporate profits appear to have come under mild downward pressure as unit labour costs have been rising slightly faster than output prices in the business sector since mid-1989.

Economic growth rates of industrialized and developing nations, global economic adjustments, and labour markets
UN economist Barry Herman noted that the level of development assistance flowing from North to South is dropping, leaving countries that are unattractive to foreign investors — such as nations in post-conflict situations, or those where per capita income is very low — in dire straits.
Although the largest single block of foreign direct investment now goes to China, when the amounts invested are compared to GDP (gross domestic product), proportionately more money is going to smaller developing countries, noted Miller.
According to Miller, the end result of these trends will be beneficial, leading to higher world incomes.
