The date was adopted in Canada in 1894 by the government of Prime Minister John Thompson, although the concept of a Labour Day actually originated with marches in both Toronto and Ottawa in 1872.
In 1899 government legislated that the day be a public holiday from 1900.
In 1910 the government "Mondayised" the holiday so that it would be observed on the same day throughout the nation.

 Labour Day & It's Origins
Before this time, workers were required to work 10 to 12 hour days, six days a week.
Labour Day is a public holiday celebrating the achievement of the 8-hour day in the late 1850s.
Most people (myself included) are blissfully ignorant about the origins of Labour Day and are just delighted to have yet another Public Holiday.
