Census and Statistics Department - Press Release - International Investment Position for 2000 and 2001
IIP is a balance sheet showing the stock of external financial assets and liabilities of an economy at a particular time point.
While IIP measures the stock of external financial assets and liabilities of an economy at the end of a reference period, the BoP financial account measures transactions in these assets and liabilities which have taken place during the period.
A Government Secretariat spokesman noted that Hong Kong's international investment position was sound, with net external financial assets amounting to $2,123.1 billion at end-2001, corresponding to 168.2% of GDP in that year.

The Daily, Tuesday, June 17, 2003. Canada's international investment position
The decline in international assets was four times the decrease in liabilities.
The value of international assets fell to $949.2 billion, a drop of $34.1 billion from their 2002 year-end level.
Combined with the currency revaluation, this resulted in a decline of $17.0 billion in foreign stock investments to $202.2 billion.

 The International Investment Position
country's international investment position is like a balance sheet in that it shows the total holdings of foreign assets by domestic residents and the total holdings of domestic assets by foreign residents at a point in time.
Note that this valuation is the US "net" investment position, meaning that it is the difference between the sum total value of Foreign assets owned by US residents (US assets abroad) minus US assets owned by foreigners (foreign-owned assets in the US).
This means that it's international investment position is in deficit and the money value of that deficit is larger than any other country in the world.

 guichett - 32003O0007 -
Statistics on net transactions in portfolio investment liabilities of the euro area are compiled by consolidation of net transactions in total national liabilities and net transactions in securities issued and purchased by euro area residents.
Inclusion of interest accrued is required for the financial account of the quarterly balance of payments and the international investment position; in the monthly balance of payments the same treatment is encouraged; these recordings in the quarterly (and monthly) financial account need to have offsetting entries in the respective income account.
Net transactions in portfolio investment liabilities of the euro area are compiled by consolidation of net transactions in total national liabilities and net transactions in securities issued and purchased by euro area residents.

Development of International Investment Position Statistics
IIP statistics are also among the items of information that members are required to report to the Fund under Article VIII, Section 5 of the Articles of Agreement.
Areas of the IIP where gaps are particularly noticeable include foreign direct investment and other nonbank private sector asssets and liabilities such as trade credit and loans.
As the IIP is a comprehensive framework covering the complete range of a country's external assets and liabilities, the source data requirements are so extensive that it is most often compiled on an annual basis.

 BEA News Release
With direct investment valued at the current stock market value of owners’ equity, the net investment position was -$2,542.2 billion (preliminary) at yearend 2004, compared with -$2,372.4 billion (revised) at yearend 2003.
The -$327.5 billion change in the net investment position from yearend 2003 to yearend 2004 was largely due to substantial net foreign purchases of U.S. Treasury securities and U.S. corporate bonds.
Foreign direct investment in the United States valued at current cost increased $123.0 billion to $1,708.9 billion, mostly as a result of net financial inflows.

 Pulse of Capitalism: April 2004
The international investment position can be likened to an individual who lists his financial assets and financial liabilities, ending up with a net balance either positive or negative.
We compared the net investment position to an individual listing his assets and liabilities to find whether he was a net creditor or debtor.
Nevertheless, the cumulative amount of current account deficits since 1990 is $-2,455.1 billion compared with a cumulative increase in the negative net investment position of $-2,127.0 billion.

Foreign Investment in the United States, by Mack Ott: The Concise Encyclopedia of Economics: Library of Economics and ...
Measured by market values, the net foreign investment position of the United States remained positive until 1987, and reached minus $360.6 billion in 1990, about 40 percent smaller than the number computed on an historic cost basis.
These data, however, are based on historic cost, the cost at the time the investment was made.
The deficits were financed by net capital inflows—foreign investment in the United States less U.S. investment abroad.

Press Releases - Israel's International Investment Position (IIP) in 2004
Much of the rise in liabilities was in nonresidents’ portfolio investments; these totaled $ 9.8 billion.
Israel's financial standing vis-?-vis abroad improved during 2004 due to the reduction in the relative size of its external liabilities and their improved composition—the capital part increased, and the liabilities are less sensitive to realizations than they were in 2003.
The balance of nonresidents’ other investments in Israel showed no significant change: nonresident individuals moderated their (net) withdrawals from their deposits in Israeli banks during 2004, and even reverted to making (net) deposits from September to the end of the year.

Survey of Current Business : The international investment position of the United States in 1984. (with related article ...
THE net international investment position of the United States declined $78.0 billion to $28.2 billion in 1984, following a decline of $40.8 billion in 1983.
The decline in the position in 1984 reflected the strong performance of the U.S. economy relative to its major trading partners; strong credit demands in the United States, including financing of mergers and acquisitions; relatively high interest rates; and the dollar's appreciation against major currencies.
Net valuation changes to the position were a negative $1.1 billion; exchange rate losses on foreign currency-denominated assets were partly offset by price appreciation on security holdings and a positive valuation adjustment to U.S. direct investment abroad (tables 1 and 2).

According to a new survey by the Organization for International Investment (OFII) of over 100 U.S. leaders of global businesses, the United States is vulnerable to losing foreign direct investment and the jobs it “insources” to America.

According to the latest U.S. Department of Commerce figures, new foreign direct investment (FDI) in the United States nearly tripled to $115 billion in 2004, up from the 2003 level of $39.9 billion.

The Hindu Business Line : CNOOC's offer for Unocal — China must not slip on US oil
China's overall investments in the US account for only $490 million up to last year, against total foreign direct investment in the US of $1.5 billion.
The US is already indebted to China for billions of dollars and what the Unocal purchase implies is only an interchange of corporate assets for Treasury debt paper.
The argument by US patriots that America would be surrendering a bit of its assets if Unocal becomes Chinese-oriented has to be assessed against the fact that the alternative is that China would use the funds so released to buy more US debt securities.

This, together with availability of financing in international markets and the country’s structural economic reforms plan, finally resulted in external capital inflows under different modalities, thus allowing the financing of balance of payments’ deficits and the increase of international reserves and of other external assets.
The net liability increase was the result of new conditions for emerging economies at the beginning of the decade, determined by the return of external credit due to payment normalization of indebted countries which gave rise to the Brady Plan implementation.

BBC NEWS Business Greenspan warns over US deficit
The deficit in US international trade is large by any standards - more than $500bn over the last year, or more than 5% of the country's economy.
Cumulative deficits, which result in a marked decline of a country's net international investment position - as is occurring in the United States - raise more complex issues
Many economists say it is unsustainable and adjustment could be painful.

IMF -Introduction to the Data Quality Reference Site
The concept of each dimension is briefly developed and the quality of data for the 1998 Australian balance of payments and international investment position is assessed against these dimensions.
The chapter on "Data Quality" in the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) publication entitled Balance of Payments and International Investment Position, Australia: Concepts, Sources, and Methods,(1998) is an example of data quality assessment undertaken by a data producer.
The authors highlight some of the conflicts that arise between different facets of data quality— such as those between consistency and timeliness—and underscore that trade-offs must be made.
