Interest - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Calculation of accrued interest of most debt uses simple interest.
Interest is a surcharge on the repayment of debt (borrowed money).
Interest is then calculated not only over the principal, but also over the interest that has been added to the debt before--in other words, it is calculated over the total amount owed.

Interest rate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The total interest on an investment depends on the timescale the interest is calculated on, because interest paid may be compounded.
An interest rate is the price a borrower pays for the use of money he does not own, and the return a lender receives for deferring his consumption, by lending to the borrower.
In finance, the effective interest rate is often derived from the yield, a composite measure which takes into account all payments of interest and capital from the investment.

Interest, by Paul Heyne: The Concise Encyclopedia of Economics: Library of Economics and Liberty
The standard procedure for calculating compound interest, under which the interest at the end of each year is added to the principal (the amount borrowed), requires borrowers who want to retain command for two years to repay 106.09 percent of the principal, assuming a 3 percent annual rate of interest.
Interest is conventionally expressed as a percentage rate for a period of one year.
The interest rate enters at least implicitly into all economic decisions, because economic decisions are made by comparing expected future benefits to costs.

Low interest, on the other hand, proceeds from the three opposite circumstances: A small demand for borrowing; great riches to supply that demand; and small profits arising from commerce: And these circumstances are all connected together, and proceed from the encrease of industry and commerce, not of gold and silver.
High interest arises from three circumstances: A great demand for borrowing; little riches to supply that demand; and great profits arising from commerce: And these circumstances are a clear proof of the small advance of commerce and industry, not of the scarcity of gold and silver.
Luxury, therefore, manufactures, arts, industry, frugality, flourishing equally as at present, it is evident, that interest must also have been as low; since that is the necessary result of all these circumstances; so far as they determine the profits of commerce, and the proportion between the borrowers and lenders in any state.

 Looking At Interest Coverage
Interest coverage is a financial ratio that provides a quick picture of a company’s ability to pay the interest charges on its debt.
For this reason, a company’s ability to meet its interest obligations, an aspect of its solvency, is arguably one of the most important factors in the return to shareholders.
Improving interest coverage is a positive signal of the company’s overall health, and a declining pattern is a danger sign of a financial difficulty, which may be imminent or far off into the future.

Excluded interest items are the interest-adjustment amounts that comprise part of the various transfers between the general fund of the Treasury and the trust funds or among the trust funds.
The effective rate is the amount of interest earned during a period divided by the average level of assets during the period.
