Index investing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Index investing, also called indexing, is a method of investing whereby a fund (or individual) buys the same stocks in the same proportions as in a target index.
If the index tracks a market sector, then the return is that of the sector.

Fool.com: 60-Second Guide to Index Investing
Index funds just invest in whatever companies are in the index.
Index funds and ETFs charge investors annually for the costs of running the fund.
If you invest in the SandP 500 or the Wilshire 5000, you are a part owner of these companies.

 Investing Concepts
Indexing is an investment approach that seeks to match the investment returns of a specified stock or bond market index also known as a benchmark.
Indexes such as the Standard & Poor's/BARRA Value Stock Index and the Standard & Poor's/BARRA Growth Stock Index, created by Standard & Poor's Corporation and BARRA Associates, enable investors to combine the benefits of either "value" or "growth" equity investing with those of indexing.
Through indexing, money can be efficiently invested in large, medium, or small companies; "value" or "growth" stocks; international stocks; and fixed-income investments - in combinations suited to an investor's objectives, risk tolerance, and time horizon.

Fool.com: Start with an Index Fund [The 13 Steps to Investing Foolishly]
Indexing is free from punitive management fees, and it is free from the concern that even shareholders of the most dynamic, stable, individual companies have about their investments from time to time.
Index funds remain the lowest-cost, lowest-maintenance form of investing for an individual.
Indexing also serves as a backstop for people who do choose to invest in individual companies.

 Index
Index Investing is one of the most popular investing methods today.
Simply invest in the index that is used as the benchmark for the success of most of these other systems.
Index Investing usually involves purchasing, in some amount, all or most of the stocks in a particular index (usually the SandP 500).

Passive Aggressive - Index investing is evil. By Daniel Akst
Index investing also makes markets less efficient by distorting the price of companies lucky enough to be included in the chosen indices.
(Index funds have an edge of perhaps 1 percent a year over conventional mutual funds, because they have extremely low operating expenses.) Research is what provides a basis for most buy and sell decisions, and is thus crucial for establishing market prices.
If traditional investing rewards efficient companies and punishes slack managements, index investing perversely rewards mediocrity, rather like a business that pays lazy workers the same as industrious ones (or an economic system that rewards everyone equally no matter how much they produce).

 Index Investing: The Basics
Given these differences in costs (which we write about much more extensively in The Index Investor), the manager of an active fund must consistently achieve substantially higher gross returns (before expenses, trading costs, and taxes) than the index fund if it is to deliver better after tax returns to investors over the long term.
They also tend to trade more often than index funds, which generates higher tax liabilities for investors (assuming the fund is held in a taxable account).
In contrast, an index mutual funds has to be purchased either through a broker or directly from the company that manages it (we cover the differences between these two types of index funds in more detail in The Index Investor).
http://www.indexinvestor.com/Free/basics.html

 The power of index investing
Indexing is simply investing in a market index such as the TSE 300 or the S&P 500, rather than in an actively managed fund where the manager picks the stocks that are expected to outperform the market.
There are solid and persistent reasons why indexing is so powerful, including low fees, low trading costs, deferred tax and market unpredictability.
When the stock market surprises us, as it has recently, the skeptics of index investing come out in full force.

 Indexed Investing
Indexed investing, which involves procedures designed to replicate a market, not to try to beat it.
Indexed and actively managed funds exist for all of these markets and for many more.

Safe Haven Index Investing's Free Lunch
Index investing is universally praised as the low cost way to capture market returns and outperform the majority of actively managed funds.
Index investing has become a major force in the investment community.
Indexing and shadow-indexing create inefficiencies because the investors are not trying to make money and prevent themselves from losing money.
http://www.safehaven.com/showarticle.cfm?id=445

 Indexing Basics
Indexing eliminates the risks, costs, and uncertainties of "active" management (stock picking and market timing).
Indexing guarantees that an investor's money will be spread over the entire market.
Other indexes focus on small companies (the Russell 2000 being one of the most famous small-cap indexes), international stocks (MSCI-EAFE), and bonds (Lehman-Brothers Aggregate Bond).

is a comprehensive resource on index funds investing, promoting a commonsense approach that seeks to maximize expected returns at each level of risk.
Among low cost index funds, risk factor exposure and index construction rules are more important than fees.
These rules differ with each index and an understanding of how the rules impact future risks and expected returns is the key to successful investing.

 Invest Wisely: Mutual Funds
Index funds aim to achieve the same return as a particular market index, such as the SandP 500 Composite Stock Price Index, by investing in all — or perhaps a representative sample — of the companies included in an index.
Index Fund — describes a type of mutual fund or Unit Investment Trust (UIT) whose investment objective typically is to achieve the same return as a particular market index, such as the SandP 500 Composite Stock Price Index, the Russell 2000 Index, or the Wilshire 5000 Total Market Index.
If you invest in a tax-exempt fund — such as a municipal bond fund — some or all of your dividends will be exempt from federal (and sometimes state and local) income tax.
http://www.sec.gov/investor/pubs/inwsmf.htm

The Tax Advantage of Index Investing
The returns that you pocket therefore are reduced by the amount you pay in taxes on your earnings.
Because the objective of index funds is to match the investment performance of a target index, the funds tend to trade securities infrequently.
Generally, the more frequently a fund buys and sells securities-that is, the higher its "turnover rate"-the more taxable capital gains it is likely to distribute, and the more of its total returns may be consumed by taxes.

Of Mutual Interest: Equity index funds offer passive investing - billingsgazette.com
For some investors, however, that might be a small price to pay for the security of having broad exposure to the entire sector.
You could build your own version of the Standard & Poor's 500 with Sector SPDRs - which divide the index's nine sectors into ETFs - buying as much or as little of each sector as you like.
"This combines the benefits of index investing with a truly customizable approach to investing your money," said Dan Dolan, director of wealth management strategies for Sector SPDRs.

 Welcome to The Index Investor
Given this, the logical way to achieve superior investment performance is to define the asset allocation policy that will achieve your goals at the lowest possible risk, and then efficiently implement it with low cost index funds (also known as "tracker funds") and exchange traded funds.
Each issue contains reviews of new index fund products and strategies, and in-depth analyses of issues related to asset allocation and the debate over active versus passive investment management.
We also examine the new "active index" funds registered by PowerShares, the Financial Planning Association's lawsuit against the SEC, the new Morningstar Exchange Traded Funds, the costs associated with index reconstitutions, whether advertising affects publications' fund recommendations, and how different asset classes might hold up under different terrorist attack scenarios.

In a fund of funds or similar structure, fees are generally charged at the fund as well as the sub-fund levels; therefore fees charged investors will be higher that those charged if the investor invested directly in the sub-fund(s).
Before making any investment, an investor should thoroughly review a Hedge Fund’s offering documents with the investor’s financial, legal and tax advisor to determine whether an investment in the Hedge Fund is suitable for the investor in light of the investor’s investment objectives, financial circumstances and tax situation.

The Long-Term Advantage of Index Investing
Indexing gains its advantage over the long term, which means you should not expect to make a "killing" in an index fund or view an index fund as a short-term investment.
Over the long term, index funds offer returns close to the market index they track, less fees.
The following chart shows how the majority of actively managed funds have under performed their comparable indexes.
