Topic: Form of government

Government - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Under traditional forms of government that ruled most of the world until a few centuries ago, such as monarchy and oligarchy, these powers were concentrated in the hands of one person or a small group of people.
The various forms of conservatism, by contrast, generally see the government as a positive force that brings order out of chaos, establishes laws to end the "war of all against all", encourages moral virtue while punishing vice, and respects tradition.
One of the most influential theories of government in the past two hundred years has been the social contract, on which modern democracy and most forms of socialism are founded.

In the council-manager form of government, the council is the governing body of the city elected by the public, and the manager is hired by council to carry out the policies it establishes.

Institutional Factors in Consolidation of Post-Communist Democracies1
Thus, empirical evidence contradicts the hypothesis that mixed forms of government have negative results in terms of democratic consolidation due to alleged increase of the tension between the head of state and parliament.
Parliamentary government and proportional representation are expected to facilitate development of a party system as the main link between society and politics; while introduction of presidential government and majoritarian representation may offer better options for a personalised politics with direct appeal to the people.
Hellman (1997) claimed that presidential governments are also less apt to urgent reforms in transitional societies.

Talk:Coercive monopoly - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In other forms of monopoly, potential competitors are deterred from entering the market purely by their inability to make a profit at the price levels the incumbent can sustain, either because of the incumbent's inherent cost advantage (natural monopoly) or the incumbent's strategic pricing decisions (contestable market).
Government subsidies are another expression of government authority, and ultimately based on the coercion underlying the ability to raise the taxes necessary to pay for them.
Greenspan defines coercive monopoly as : "a business concern that can set its prices and production policies independent of the market, with immunity from competition, from the law of supply and demand." Then he goes on to opine that this can only be accomplished through government intervention.

Corruption in all its forms is the most serious threat to poverty and good governance, and the outlawing of bribes paid in foreign countries is a crucial weapon in that fight.
