Economics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Economics (from the Greek οίκος [oikos], 'family, household, estate', and νομος [nomos], 'custom, law', hence "household management" and "management of the state") is a social science that typically studies the production, distribution, trade and consumption of goods and services.
In marginalist economic theory, the price level is determined by the marginal cost and marginal utility.
Both "economy" and "economics" are derived from the Greek oikos- for "house" or "settlement", and nomos for "laws" or "norms".

Finally, understanding decision requires knowledge beyond the traditional bounds of economics, a challenge to which Hume and Smith were not strangers.

Thus, revenue equivalence theorems show that the standard auctions generate identical expected outcomes leaving no apparent economic reason for choosing between them.

Origin and Recent Developments of Experimental Economics
Those who criticize experimental economics underlined that firms are not run by young students, but by expert managers; therefore the results can hardly be considered relevant.
According to a widespread opinion, "experimentalism" in economics began in this sector.
In that experiment transactions of a good on a competitive market were simulated, verifying prices and exchanged quantities.

Finance & Development, March 2003 - The Lab Man: How experimental economics emerged from the shadows
In Smith's early laboratory experiments, subjects were randomly assigned roles as sellers and buyers; they were individually told the lowest price at which they could sell or the highest price at which they could buy.
Jeremy Clift is on the staff of Finance and Development.
Participants in Smith's experiments come from many fields and include corporate executives, market traders, graduate students, and trained economists.

Experimental economics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Naive bidders (and even many experienced bidders) are unlikely to know this bidding strategy, and may therefore allow the price to fall "too low" before purchasing.
Smith found that in some forms of centralized trading, prices and quantities traded in such markets converge on the values that would be predicted by the economic theory of perfect competition, despite the conditions not meeting many of the assumptions of perfect competition (large numbers, perfect information).
Vernon Smith, formerly of the University of Arizona and now at the Interdisciplinary Center for Economic Science at George Mason University conducted pioneering economics experiments on the convergence of prices and quantities to their theoretical competitive equilibrium values in experimental markets.

Conspiracy, price controls and other types of market interventions were examined experimentally for the first time.
The lessons drawn from experimental economics are of immense value to both researchers and policymakers, and have been applied widely to such areas as financial market theory and behavior, natural resource economics, and the deregulation of network industries.

In economics his work with Vernon Smith led to the discovery of the "posted price effect" and to the measurement of efficiency in experimental markets, both of which are central to the foundations of policy related experimental work on market institutions.
