The Board of Excise was merged to the existing Board of Taxes and Board of Stamps to create the new Board of Inland Revenue in 1849.
It was responsible for the collection of Value-added tax, Customs Duties, Excise Duties, and other indirect taxes such as Air Passenger Duty, Climate Change Levy, Insurance Premium Tax, Landfill Tax and Aggregates Levy.
The combined Board of Customs and Excise was formed in 1909 by the transfer of responsibility for Excise from the Board of Inland Revenue.

Lalor, Cyclopaedia of Political Science, V.2, Entry 38, EXCISE: Library of Economics and Liberty
The excise has even yielded a larger proportion of the net income than the above table would seem to show; for the customs items of each year contain large sums which were returned as rebates, paid out as premiums, etc., amounting, in some cases, to as much as £2,500,000.
Like all indirect taxes on commodities, the excise will raise the price of the commodity in the long run by at least the amount of the tax.
It will be seen that the produce from the excise generally exceeded that from the customs from 1780 down to 1825, though it will be remembered that for a hundred years preceding 1825, several items had been counted under the head of excise which belonged properly under the head of customs.

The Hindu : Excise, customs duties cut ahead of polls
Since excise and customs duties can be altered through administrative orders, the changes in indirect taxes would take effect from Friday while changes in direct tax procedures would come into effect from the new financial year.
The Union Finance Ministry was, however, reticent about the expected revenue loss on account of the excise and customs duty cuts but rough estimates indicate that it could be in the region of Rs.
Constrained because income tax concessions cannot be handed out without Parliamentary approval, the focus of today's exercise was to reduce customs and excise duties, while simplifying procedures on the direct tax front to keep the middle income individuals and pensioners out of any interface with the tax authorities.

THE rationalisation of customs and excise duties announced by the Finance Ministry today may blow a large hole in the exchequer, with the Centre expected to forego revenues of roughly Rs 9,000 crore during a full financial year.
For the current fiscal, the revenues from SAD has been budgeted at Rs 3,757 crore, which means the 5 per cent cut in the peak rate of customs and the abolition of SAD together will leave the exchequer poorer by almost Rs 6,800-7,000 crore.
A top official from the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) told Business Line that the move to slash the peak rate of customs duty on all non-farm goods alone would entail annual losses of about Rs 3,000 crore.
