Economy of Europe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Europe's largest national economy is that of Germany, which ranks third globally in nominal GDP, and fourth in purchasing power parity (PPP) GDP.
West Europe, with a long history of trade, a free market system, and a high level of development in the previous century, has been wealthier and more stable than the East, even though the gap is converging due to higher growth rates in the East.
In Eastern Europe the financial sector is somewhat less developed (mostly because of the communist legacy), but is rapidly developing to Western European standards helped by economic growth in Eastern Europe and the commitment of Eastern European governments to achieve these high standards.

The Economy of Europe in an Age of Crisis, 1600-1750
Unlike traditional commodities manufactured locally or within the household economy of peasant families, exotic goods and the cheaper kinds of manufactures available through trade had to be paid for with cash, which in the steady state could only be earned by exporting more goods to the urban sector.
Economies of scale resulting from the concentration long-distance trade and related activities into a smaller number of large cities, however, could not fully explain how an economy in crisis could generate points of economic progress and prosperity.
In the degree that the period was defined by the 'stage' attained by the most progressive nations, it was characterized by the expansion of municipal and regional market economies to a larger national level of aggregation.

The Commission is keeping the impact of ICT on the economy, on enterprises and on the main economic policy instruments under constant scrutiny.
The way in which ICT is changing the life of enterprises, workers, public administrations and citizens in general is becoming more realistically understood.
These steps encompass notably the fostering of a culture of entrepreneurship and innovation; enhancing ICT skills levels to participate effectively in the e-Economy; raising the ability of European enterprises to compete in a modern global economy; and further improving the functioning of the internal market.

TIME Europe Magazine: New Europe Old Economy --
Once the go-go economy of post-communist Eastern Europe, the place is mired in a three-year slump: unemployment is over 18%, growth last year was an anemic 1.3% and the left-wing ruling party of Prime Minister Leszek Miller, the point man on the economy, is the least popular of any since the communist era.
But critics say the government, which plans to cut corporate income tax from 27% to 19% while abolishing most tax breaks and exemptions, is not doing enough — especially to cut social spending and invest in infrastructure like roads.
The deal is expected to bring in up to $12 billion in offsetting investments, purchases and other contributions to the Polish economy, though actual direct investment will be closer to $1.5 billion.

Old economy industries resort to the new economy networks and tools to increase productivity, improve their human resources management, gather information about competitors and measure their own performance with others, fund capital increases, pool distribution or retailing capacity, reach more customers, or simply consult the ‘web’ for information.
The new economy is brimming with new ideas and “speed” is the name of the game: new jobs, new working conditions, new power centres, mobile capital, new forms of capital (pension funds), fundamental changes in the financial sector, on-line brokers for individual investors — at the same time coupled with speculation risks.
The spectacular way in which Europe is catching up and the vulnerability of certain US firms are clear evidence that the development of ICTs and the creation of jobs do not in any way necessitate the dismantling of standards which provide a guarantee of social cohesion.

If the population growth was accompanied by a tendency towards smaller numbers of large households, for example, environmental pressures from the ‘household’ sector could well decrease.
Unfortunately, Europe’s demographic trends currently point in the opposite direction: the number of households is actually increasing faster than the population as a whole, as families shrink and the number of one-person households grows.
What is clear is that the level of growth seen in today’s economy and population increases our environmental problems, as neither the economy nor the size of the population have been ‘decoupled’ from environmental damage.
