 Dow Theory - T2W Traderpedia
Dow Theory considers that market movements can be described in terms of the primary trend (the [[bull market}bull]] and bear markets which are measured in years), the secondary movements (which are measured in weeks to months) and daily fluctuations, which are of little significance.
A theory which is based on the belief that the fluctuations in the stock market are both a reflection of current business trends as well as a predictor of future business trends.
Dow Theory is based on the assumption that the averages discount everything.

Dow Theory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dow described what he saw as a recurring theme in the market: that prices would move sharply in one direction, recede briefly in the opposite direction, and then continue in their original direction.
To start with, Dow defined an uptrend as a time when successive rallies in a security price close at levels higher than those achieved in previous rallies and when lows occur at levels higher than previous lows.
If many participants are active in a particular security, and the price moves significantly in one direction, Dow maintained that this was the direction in which the market anticipated continued movement.

 Dow Theory
(Dow formed these theorems about 100 years ago, but this scenario is certainly familiar.) During the third and final stage, the public is fully involved in the market, valuations are excessive and confidence is extraordinarily high.
Dow and Hamilton identified three types of price movements for the Dow Jones Industrial and Rail averages: primary movements, secondary movements and daily fluctuations.
In the past few years, the concept of risk in stocks has diminished, but it is still a fact that stocks carry more risk than bonds.

Dow's Theory has proven itself over the past 102 years to be a useful, sound and profitable investment approach.

The first move up is the result of far-sighted investors accumulating stocks at a time when business is slow but anticipated to improve.

Schaefer believed that Hamilton strayed away from Dow's original principle of investing in "values" and that Rhea spent most of his life improvising Hamilton’s "system" of trying to trade the markets when 95% of the population just cannot duplicate what the emotional-less professional traders can do.
The market represents a serious well-considered effort on the part of far-sighted and well-informed men to adjust prices to such values as exist or which are expected to exist in the not too remote future.

 Dow Theory and Elliott Waves
While Dow believed that there were three types of trends in stock market movements, during the 1930's Ralph N. Elliott, an accountant who closely examined long-run charts of stock prices, proposed that there is virtually unlimited bull and bear trends of differing scale (2).
First, the stock market is the most overvalued ever according to common measures of valuation like PE ratios, dividend yields and price-to-book values (see Part I for more information.).
Regardless of how far the stock prices might fall, if a Grand Supercycle bear market has really started, the decline should occur over the course of several years if not decades.

The irony here, of course, is that Dow was an avowed fundamentalist, propagating the notion that prices followed earnings and that balance sheets should be made public for all investors to see.
Companies in this bygone era were not too keen on allowing investors to see what sort of cash, debt, or receivables they were carrying on their balance sheets.
Dow was originally credited with creating the first general market average in July of 1884, although he later modified this and began to publish separate Industrial and Railroad Averages on May 26, 1896.
