Capitalism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The capitalist pays the workers a portion of this profit for their labor, pays other overhead costs, and keeps the rest.
The ability of capitalist economies to sustainably increase and improve their stock of capital was central to the argument which Adam Smith advanced for a free market setting production, price and resource allocation.
Those in control of capital (capitalists) purchase or invest in the means of production to run them for profit.

Michael Kidron: Two insights don't make a theory (1977)
If in the private capitalist system workers safeguarded a modicum of independence and strength in their relations with each capital by forming unions that spanned several capitals, in state capitalism the task is very much harder since the only equivalents are international organisations which must inevitably be political.
In private capitalism labour policy was simple: as a capitalist you paid as little as you needed to and got as much as you could from as many workers as you could afford to employ given the size of your total capital and its distribution amongst wage and other costs.
In such a system the tendency is for productive spending or accumulation to be undertaken by capitals, and waste, albeit necessary, spending to be undertaken by the non-capitalist society, either directly or through the state.

An Introductory Explanation of Capitalist Economic Crises
Capitalist production, on the one hand, has this driving force; on the other hand, it only tolerates production commensurate with the profitable employment of existing capital.
If the capitalists are not paying the workers enough to buy back the goods they produce, then they can just loan them the money (at interest of course!) to buy those goods.
One of the reasons for the massive, and ever-worsening stagnation which developed under the Soviet form of state capitalism during the revisionist era (1956-1990) was that they had relatively undeveloped mechanisms for the creation of credit bubbles.

 Ten Capitalist Myths
Capitalist competition means more, cheaper, faster; cheaper goods, cheaper shelter, and cheaper protein, but it's not always better.
That the Europeans have been successful capitalists doesn't mean they invented capitalism, and it doesn't automatically consign capitalism to European values and prerogatives.
If all that really mattered were to maximize quarterly profits the world would already be a wasteland.

The Capitalist Manifesto: The Great Disconnect by Andrew Bernstein -- Capitalism Magazine
But, contrary to their wishes, the freedom of the capitalist system will always lead to enormous disparities of income, because, in fact, individuals are not equal.
Further, just as the freest nations, i.e., the most capitalist ones, are the wealthiest — so the most repressed countries are the most destitute.
Without investment, loans, aid, technical training and supplies, etc., from the capitalist nations, the unfree countries would subsist in vastly worse misery than they already do.

Due to the dominance of joint-stock companies, the dominance of the individual capitalist in an individual large company has steadily declined.
Financiers lend money and receive interest (loans, bonds, overdrafts) or buy equities from joint-stock companies to receive a dividend.
Bonds and equities can also be traded for profit on a exchange.

 Karl Kautsky: Capitalist Class (Chap.5)
Thus, in all these several ways the State, or the Government, reduces the profits or surplus of the capitalist; as the capitalist system develops, the causes that lead to that result are intensified; despite all capitalist manoeuvres to stem them, the inroads increase upon the surplus which labor produces and which capital grabs.
For every weakness in the constitution or make-up of the capitalist system, a special function is required of modern Government.
The more it produces, the larger becomes the number of proletarians, and, consequently, the slighter the general capacity of the people to purchase their own products in the markets of their own country.

 Toward an Anti-Capitalist Globe
Let's face it, opposing capitalist globalization does not make much of a dent in all those struggles we have known and cared about since long before Bretton Woods redefined global economics.
Like those of us who've devoted significant energy struggling against the World Trade Organization, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and various free trade agreements, community activists recognize capitalist globalization for what it is: an ally and a weapon of their adversaries in government and big business.
The term "anti-capitalist globalization" is my preferred label for the movement, because it forms a relevant double entendre.

An Introductory Explanation of Capitalist Economic Crises
According to Marx, the workers sell their labor-power to the capitalists for a certain period of time, and for a certain sum of money which represents (on average) the value of that labor-power.
It is the contradiction between social production and private appropriation, or in other words, the capitalist relations of production, which stand in the way of the full employment of this social production and technology to satisfy the needs of all the people.
The total market, therefore, among the masses as a whole (including all the workers and their families, as well as the rest of the lower classes), will always be smaller than the total production of the entire working class.

 The Capitalist System
(And the small and medium-sized capitalists, not being able to produce at the same price as the big capitalists, naturally succumb in the deadly struggle.) On the other hand, all enterprises are forced by the same competition to sell their products at the lowest possible price.
Had there been equality between those who offer their labor and those who purchase it, between the necessity of selling one's labor and the necessity of buying it, the slavery and misery of the proletariat would not exist.
But - the economists tell us - the property owners, the capitalists, the employers, are likewise forced to seek out and purchase the labor of the proletariat.

The Capitalist Use of Machinery: Marx Versus the Objectivists' Raniero Panzieri
Hence, workers' control must be seen as a preparation for situations of 'dual power', in connection with a total political conquest of power.
Obviously, therefore, the most interesting aspects of the 'objectivist', 'economistic' ideologies have to do with the problems of technological development and factory organization.
29 On the ways in which a more rational capitalist administration requires 'democratic' participation by the workers, see the very important book by S. Melman, Decision-Making and Productivity, Oxford 1958.

Workers World [Sam Marcy]: The ABC of the capitalist crisis (April 2, 1992)
Whether the capitalist cycle of production has been restarted has to be examined independently of any ephemeral improvement in economic conditions generally.
The market is anticipating fabulous profits from the restructuring of the capitalist economy.
A restart of the economy begins with the employment of workers, from whom the capitalists extract real profit.

Amazon.com: Books: The Capitalist Philosophers : The Geniuses of Modern Business--Their Lives, Times, and Ideas
One of the many threads that hold together Gabor's profiles is the issue of "two seemingly irreconcilable visions of management--the scientific and humanistic." She writes that humanists see the corporation "as a pivotal institution of democracy with complex responsibilities to a host of constituencies, including its employees, its customers, and the community.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this sweeping account of management theory in the 20th century is how various business leaders and thinkers--the people Gabor (The Man Who Discovered Quality) calls "capitalist philosophers"--wrestle with the two components of economic success: creating efficient systems, and finding and motivating the people to operate those systems.

 Anarchist Theory FAQ Version 5.2
The end result is likely to be the standard form of capitalist organization, in which workers receive a fixed payment for their services and the owners of the firms' shares earn the variable profits.
In a way, the state- capitalist system creates the problem of externalities by basing all decisions upon profit, and then claims that we need the state to protect us from the very results of this profit-oriented decision-making process.
However, in theory an "anarcho-capitalist" society might be filled with nothing but communes or worker- owned firms, so long as these associations were formed voluntarily (i.e., individuals joined voluntarily and capital was obtained with the consent of the owners) and individuals retained the right to exit and set up corporations or other profit-making, individualistic firms.

What To Expect From A Venture Capitalist - Forbes.com
Understand a venture capitalist's life: He's on as many as ten boards that meet at least quarterly and sometimes once a month; he has to raise money to invest and keep about 25 investors informed and happy; he's looking at several deals a day; he's dealing with five other partners.
The more important question is, "What can I expect out of a good venture capitalist?" The answer to this is: five hours per month of mindshare during which he opens doors for you with prospective customers and partners and interviews candidates for high-level positions at your company.
Here's the priority: the real needs of your business, the amount the investor wants to put in, and last and least important, dilution.

 SOCIAL STRATIFICATION: ADDITIONAL READINGS
Their critique of the capitalist economy (a Marxian one) furthers their analysis of education insofar as schooling is a crucial people-producing process.
Although the overall development of the capitalist economy points toward a dual tendency of horizontal extension of the wage labor system and production for profit, and an increasingly sophisticated deepening of hierarchical mechanisms of control, this process was neither complete nor uniform.
Rather, the 'business methods' in schools meant that administrators were recruited from the ranks of politicians and businessmen rather than professional educators, so that their orientation was toward cost-savings and control rather than the quality of education.

While proclaiming their system to be a competitive one, in which private interest rules unchecked, they show it operating as a co-operative one, in which no person or group profits at the cost of another.
The anarcho-capitalists simply take it for granted that in their favoured society, although it possesses no machinery for restraining competition (for this would need to exercise authority over the competitors and it is an _anarcho_- capitalist society) competition would not be carried to the point where anybody actually suffered from it.
Neither is there anybody able to buy much more than anybody else; no person or group possesses economic power over others.

A Capitalist War? by Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr.
While war can result in profit for a few, it is not the case that the entire system of a free economy depends on such wartime profiteering.
This is supposedly because exploitation exhausts capital values in the domestic economy, and hence capital owners must relentlessly seek to replenish their funds through grabbing foreign resources.
Recall that it was then-secretary of state James Baker who said the first Iraq war was all about "jobs, jobs, jobs." The line between the owners of capital and the warfare state has never been that clean in American history, and it has arguably never been as conspicuously blurred as it is today.

 Hot Tide Anti-Authoritarian/Anti-Capitalist Analysis Page
For some time the anti-authoritarian/anti-capitalist milieu has paid too little attention to the contemporary, worldwide history of capitalism and the struggles to overcome it.
If we our to make our resistance as transnational as capital and build links between those who attack capitalism throughout the world, we need to analyse how capitalism effects people of different regions, differently.

 Capitalist - Open Encyclopedia
Some philosophers and political theorists, such as Ayn Rand and David Friedman, use "capitalist" to mean "an advocate of capitalism." Historically, some governments (such as, most famously, the Soviet Union) used "capitalists" as a pejorative blanket term in state-sponsored propaganda to refer to the governments of the Western Hemisphere and their supporters.
In economics, a capitalist is someone who owns capital, presumably within the economic system of capitalism.

It is argued that market socialism would likely also face significant problems of exploitation and alienation, though the question of whether or not it is to be preferred to capitalism, in some all things considered way, is left unresolved.

 Antagonism
The contradiction between the possibilities that human ingenuity has created (in terms of productivity and communication) and the misery that the social system of global capital imposes on us, has never been so acute.
The process of capitalist restructuring, underway for over two decades, has deliberately aimed at permanently destroying the old centres of proletarian power.
A part of this restructuring has been globalisation, entailing widespread relocation of production from areas of high class struggle to, areas where capital can more easily expand itself.
