Business organizations - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Other types of business organizations, such as cooperatives, credit unions and publicly-owned enterprises, can be established with purposes that parallel, supercede, or even replace the profit maximization mandate of business corporations.
The basic theory behind all business organizations is that, by combining certain functions within a single entity, a business (usually called a firm by economists) can operate more efficiently, and thereby realize a greater profit.
Except for the partnership, all business forms are designed to provide limited liability to both members of the organization and external investors.

 Alfred P. Sloan Foundation
Much of the academic work concerned with the nature and purpose of business organizations has been carried out over the years by scholars in economics, corporate law, and business.
This program (formerly "Role of the Corporation") supports academic research and scholarship aimed at painting a realistic picture of how corporations and other business organizations function, with special emphasis on how the people in them actually behave, how they are motivated, and how they are rewarded.
The Foundation has sought to increase understanding of these organizations because of the enormous effect they have on the standard of living and quality of life for most people in the United States and around the world.
