Business improvement district - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
BIDs are grassroots organizations, that are driven by community support and require legislative authorization by the municipality in which it resides, in order to be established.
A business improvement district (BID) (also known as a special improvement district or a business improvement area) is a public/private sector partnership in which property and business owners of a defined area elect to make a collective contribution to the maintenance, development and marketing/promotion of their commercial district.
The services provided by BIDs are a supplement to the services already provided by the municipality.

One-third of the district's projected annual budget of $1.1 million to $1.2 million would be covered by contributions from tax-exempt entities such as colleges and universities and by grants.
