Bundesbank may raise interest rates to defend Deutschmark
The Bundesbank's professed concern is that because the bulk of industrial raw material inputs plus fuel and energy are dollar-priced commodities, a weak Deutschmark brings the risk of imported inflation.
Last week the Bundesbank issued an unusual statement that it would pay great attention to the Deutschmark's exchange rate and activity in the financial markets in future interest rate decisions.
While the key securities repurchase rate - at which the Bundesbank provides money to banks against the collateral of gilts - was left unchanged at 3%, that applies for only two weeks.

Germany, Bundesbank Clash Over Currency Maneuver
In a rare public clash between the government and the powerful Bundesbank, the central bank said that it opposed the government's plan to virtually erase the budget deficit this year by revaluing the bank's gold reserves to book a quick profit.
The move dramatized the German government's increasingly serious plight characterized by a heavy debt burden, shrinking tax revenues and a ballooning budget deficit.
But the government Wednesday night said in a statement that its accounting adjustment "in no way infringes on the successful stability policy of the Bundesbank, its independence and its sole responsibility for monetary policy." The statement signed by Kohl and Finance Minister Theo Waigel and other government leaders, followed the bank's declaration by minutes.

If German credit institutions undertake operations in another EU member state, the Federal Banking Supervisory Office and the Bundesbank, to the extent that the latter takes action under the Banking Act, are required to cooperate with the banking supervisory authorities of that state (section 8 (3) sentence 1 of the Banking Act).
This clause stipulates that credit institutions and insurance enterprises must report their loans of three million Deutsche Mark or more to the Bundesbank, which adds together the loans to individual borrowers and subsequently notifies the lenders of the total indebtedness of their borrowers and the number of lenders involved.
It is only the Bundesbank system, with its main offices and branch offices, that permits efficient and cost-effective supervision, at the local level, of the over 4,000 credit institutions in the Federal Republic of Germany.

THERE MAY BE NO GOLD IN THE BUNDESBANK VAULTS
The Bundesbank has loaned 1,700 tonnes, half its 3,400 tonnes reserve; the other 1,700 tonnes were swapped for gold in the US reserves.
He knew that the Bundesbank was an active lender of gold, but he had a difficult time accepting the possibility that all 3,400 tonnes that it owned had been loaned.
And the informed rumor from totally reliable sources is that the Bundesbank then felt compelled to go beyond earlier more prudent lending, to now provide the Deutsche Bank (and perhaps other banks) with direct and indirect loans to the full amount of its reserves.

 RESEARCH SUMMARY
In particular, the public's confidence in the Bundesbank's commitment to low inflation has allowed it the flexibility to pursue short-term objectives, such as stabilization of output or the exchange rate, without increasing the inflation expectations of the public.
Our formal test of whether the Bundesbank targets money therefore amounts to checking whether shocks to the expected evolution of the money stock affect the setting of the Lombard rate, holding fixed the forecast of inflation.
Specifically, among candidate indicators such as various short-term interest rates or measures of bank reserves, we can determine which indicators (or combinations of indicators) have the highest correlation with shocks to policy (and, accordingly, a low correlation with endogenous factors like changes in the demand for reserves).
