Banks Oppose Accounting Proposals (The British Bankers' Association) - Pressi.com
The British Bankers’ Association (BBA) opposes proposals published by the Accounting Standards Board (ASB) recommending that banks should use market values for measuring all financial assets and liabilities in their annual accounts.
The ASB consultation paper is due to be published on Thursday, 14 December and would result in banks having to make radical changes to the way in which they value their loan portfolios and customer deposits in their annual accounts.
Tim Sweeney, BBA Director General, said: "The standard setters are aware that the banking industry considers these proposals to be substantially flawed.

9-14-99, Statement of the British Bankers' Association
TWEA required British banks to yield control of "enemy" accounts and other assets to a Government officer: the Custodian of Enemy Property ("the Custodian").
During the past year, UK banks have been in close contact with the British Department of Trade and Industry and have maintained dialogue with non-governmental organisations as part of the effort to identify assets in the UK relating to accounts controlled by the Government under TWEA.
As with any declared state of war, the British Government's aim was to prevent "the enemy" from benefiting from any assets held in the UK.

BBA - British Bankers' Association - Home
Latest BBA figures show the continued growth of basic bank accounts, which enable direct receipt of benefits and credits from government.
Banks' relationship with their business customers will become clearer following the launch today (July 1) by the British Bankers' Association (BBA) of the revised Statement of Principles covering how banks will work with businesses who borrow from their bank.
Opening bank accounts for people who are unable to manage their own affairs will be easier following the introduction of new industry guidance for banks and customers by the British Bankers Association (BBA) today (June 16).

 Electronic Law Journals - JILT 1999 (2) - Campbell
Bankers have to take care to constantly monitor the health of their loan portfolios to ensure that action can be taken where business borrowers are under performing.[4] The combination of the possibility of an economic downturn and the potential Y2K problem provides a situation of great concern for the banking industry.
Business customers borrow substantial sums from banks and this type of business is, of course, a major source of income and profit for the banks.
The ways in which the banks may use this power will be examined in the light of the publication by the British Bankers Association of Banks and Businesses: Working Together - A Statement of Principles (1997).

House of Commons - Treasury - Written Evidence
The BBA: with over 240 member banks from over 60 countries, the BBA is the authoritative voice of the banking industry in the UK, and represents members' interests in both wholesale and retail markets.
Dormant Accounts: the industry is currently working with HM Treasury to explore various technical aspects around their proposal that unclaimed assets should be donated to charity—such as tax, legal and accounting issues.
Non-commercial organisations and investment advice: the BBA considers that measures to enable non-profit making organisations, employers or CABs et al to provide investment advice is broadly positive given that consumers will be able to access alternative sources of investment advice and ultimately be better placed to make informed decisions.

MORI - Half The Population Likely To Overspend At Christmas, British Bankers' Association
Tim Sweeney, director general of the BBA said: "Spending more than we planned seems to be one of the Christmas traditions most of us take for granted, but it's not hard to avoid Christmas festivities turning into a New Year financial hangover - just remember to allow for some leeway for extra spending.
Perhaps surprisingly, people in the most affluent region, Greater London and the South East are the most disciplined when it comes to sticking to their planned budgets (55%), while 55% of northerners expect to spend more than planned.
Forty nine per cent of the population say they will either set no budget at all or at best only a loose budget, while one in ten people say that they will spend "whatever they feel necessary to have a good Christmas".

Federal Reserve Bank of New York - McDonough Speech before the British Bankers Association
Greater recognition of the benefits of risk mitigation techniques, such as collateral, guarantees, credit derivatives and netting, also is at the forefront of the Committee's work in revising the Accord.
In January of last year, the Committee held consultations with over 50 banks and industry associations within the G-10 on their methods for mitigating credit risk.
The Committee, through its Risk Management Group, also is engaged in the development of a capital requirement for other risks, in particular operational risk.

BBC NEWS Business Credit card debt starts to fall
But, the BBA said the fall in card debt could be temporary, adding that loan and mortgage borrowing had risen.
The BBA added that personal loan and overdraft debt had increased by £415m during April.
The small drop in credit card debt could be seen as further indication of a slowdown in High Street spending.

The BBA said underlying mortgage lending rose just ?4 billion ($7.8 billion) last month, the weakest monthly flow since January 2002.
That compares with monthly gains of well over ?5 billion earlier this year, which comes after five interest rate hikes in a year from the Bank of England to 4.75 percent and the possibility that rates may climb again in 2005.
LONDON -- Mortgage lending by British banks rose by its weakest monthly amount in nearly three years, the British Bankers' Association said Monday, in the latest evidence that the British housing market has cooled considerably.
