Berkshire Hathaway's core business is insurance, including underwriting of property and casualty insurance, reinsurance and specialty insurance.
All of Berkshire’s major insurance subsidiaries are rated AAA by Standard and Poor’s Corporation, the highest Financial Strength Rating assigned by Standard and Poor’s, and are rated A++ (superior) by A.M. Best with respect to their financial condition and operating performance.
Buffett has used the "float" provided by Berkshire Hathaway's insurance operations (policyholders money which it holds temporarily and is allowed to invest for its own profit) to finance his investment schemes.

The disclosure documents, which were filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, show that Berkshire held slightly less than 9.5 million Anheuser shares by the end of December 2004, which was then valued about $482 million.
The latest disclosures were made to reveal that Berkshire's stakes in Anheuser and Wal-Mart were omitted from the previous 13F filings.
The rules guiding the disclosures also permit filers to petition the commission for confidentiality for certain transactions, a tactic used by Berkshire 18 times over the past five years, and SEC official has said.
