The flight pattern is midway between cliff and barn swallows, displaying a moderately forked tail and rather broad wings that appear dark, in contrast to the belly.
Unlike cliff swallows, which have very specific requirements for their colonies, barn swallows are comfortable against almost any wall or in almost any open building.
The color of the barn swallow is very like that of the cliff swallow, but barn swallows have longer, narrower and more pointed wings and distinctive forked tails.
