American Stock Exchange - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Out of the three major American stock exchanges, the AMEX is known to have the most liberal policies concerning company listing, as most of its companies are generally smaller compared to the NYSE and NASDAQ.
The Exchange traces its roots back to colonial times when stock brokers created outdoor markets to trade new government securities.
As trading activity increased, the shouting reached such a high level that special hand signals had to be introduced so that the brokers could continue trading.

 American Stock Exchange Definition
Stocks, bonds and mutual funds are the most popular asset classes and therefore get most of the market's attention, but there are other important investment opportunities every investor should know about as well, including options, futures, and currency.
In general, the listing rules are a little more lenient than those of the NYSE, and thus the AMEX has a larger representation of stocks and bonds issued by smaller companies than the NYSE.
It originated when brokers began meeting on the curb outside the NYSE in order to trade stocks that failed to meet the Big Board’s stringent listing requirements, but the AMEX now has its own trading floor.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the apex government body which regulates the capital market in Nigeria, favours a multiple exchange system, which it views as a better option for attracting investors to cities other than Lagos, the business nerve centre of the country, where capital market activities are concentrated.
Dealing Members of The Nigerian Stock Exchange (Stockbrokerage Firms) can now accommodate foreign shareholders in their equity capital; or go into any form of Partnership with foreign stockbrokerage firms.
All the securities listed on The Nigerian Stock Exchange Official List are still registered securities, in which case bearer note transactions remain inadmissible on The Exchange.

American Stock Exchange Inc. on Market Structure Issues
The American Stock Exchange has a long history of innovation and is unique among the U.S. securities markets in that we are the only market that actively lists and trades securities across three diverse business lines - equities, options and exchange traded funds, commonly referred to as ETFs.
The numerous requirements applicable to exchanges stifle innovation and impede their ability to compete with the less regulated and, therefore, more nimble ATSs.
This past Friday, the American Stock Exchange submitted to the other markets a proposal for a more sophisticated and substantive method for allocating market data revenues among the CQ/CTA Plan participants.

NASD, the parent company of Amex, is in the process of completing a deal to sell the exchange for about $110 million to GTCR Golder Rauner LLC, a Chicago-based private equity firm.
Its parent is trying to sell it off, the market value of its options have steadily declined, it's being investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the value of a seat has fallen from about $500,000 to a little over $100,000.
In February, the Amex -- which trades stocks and options on a traditional trading floor -- slipped from its No. 2 spot in equity options volume to No. 3 due to the growth of electronic options trading on the ISE.

With word of the SEC probe, the scandal scorecard for U.S. stock markets became a decisive, and apparently definitive, score of 2-1: two stock markets tarred by scandals at the millennium's close, and one untouched for the greater part of two decades.
In recent weeks, the Amex lost its largest stock listing--Viacom, which accounted for some 4% of all volume on the floor of the exchange.
Its archrival, NASDAQ, has been bruised by incessant micro-cap scandals and by accusations, in lawsuits and in an SEC report, that NASDAQ market makers were conspiring to fix prices.
