164.512(f), which says covered entities can disclose PHI to law enforcement without patient authorization if they are required to by law, or if there is a court order, court-ordered warrant, grand-jury subpoena or an administrativeb> subpoena/summons (under certain conditions).
Plus, a covered entity may reveal this PHI only if law enforcement makes a request (which could be a specific request to the covered entity, a public request for information or an outstanding warrant for a person's arrest).
Law enforcement may know next to nothing about HIPAA because police agencies aren't covered entities and so the rule doesn't directly apply to them, but hospitals are finding out every day how often HIPAA will cross paths with the police.
