LAGOS — PRESIDENT of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole yesterday in Abuja asked workers and the general public to proceed with the planned anti-fuel hike strike, from tomorrow, saying it was regrettable that government had not taken appropriate steps to address the immediate grievances of Nigerians occasioned by government’s harsh petroleum pricing policy.
Reflecting on the activities of Mantu Committee and the recent measures adopted by government to cushion the effect of the fuel hike, the NLC leader said government only wanted to give the impression that it is sensitive to peoples desire while it continued the implementation of the punitive measure.
Mr President (Obasanjo) has said that this is not possible because that will amount to derailing the deregulation policy of the government on the downstream of the oil sector.

Oshiomhole is president of the umbrella Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) which ordered workers to strike until the government reversed the price increases.
Average income in Nigeria is around $300 a year and the issue of fuel prices in the oil-producing country has been a contentious one for years.
Labor leaders accuse Obasanjo of blindly following the dictates of Western creditors demanding an end to subsidies before Nigeria gets relief on its foreign debt of about $30 billion.

Addressing journalists on the outcome of the NEC-in-Session, Oshiomhole said that the price increase had "aggravated the poverty level of Nigerians." The NEC, however, expressed Labour's readiness for dialogue with the government on the issues before the expiration of the ultimatum.
After the last strike in June, the Federal Government set up a joint committee comprising the government, the NLC and the other stakeholders who travelled round the 36 states of the country.
President will neither read nor reply us if it goes to the press before it gets to him." Oshiomhole wondered why Nigerians were being exposed to harsh economic measures when the nation's foreign reserves are now estimated to be above $13 billion, while excess crude oil revenue is also in billions of dollars.
