The Transformation of American Abolitionism: Fighting Slavery in the Early Republic, by Richard S. Newman. Introduction.
With this shift in location, abolitionist strategy, tactics, and, perhaps most significantly, personnel shifted too.
Bay Staters argued that the PAS's dispassionate works elided slavery's immorality and restricted abolitionist activity to the educated few.
"I like the spirit of Massachusetts abolitionism," one Maine reformer wrote at the end of the 1830s, for "it is energetic." Pennsylvania reformers realized that a transition had occurred, and that abolitionists in Massachusetts (whom they labeled "Garrisonian" or "modern" reformers) now occupied a leadership position.

The Black Abolitionist Papers: Vol. I: The British Isles, 1830-1865, Edited by C. Peter Ripley. Introduction.
Black abolitionists also realized that a well-developed British antislavery sentiment gave British reform leaders greater authority to influence their government.
Usually a collection was made at the end of a meeting, and a few speakers charged admission, but it is unlikely that lecturing alone paid the bills.
Pennington is credited with helping to start the Glasgow New Association for the Abolition of Slavery.[58] It would be impossible to estimate the number of converts that became members of British anti-slavery organizations as a result of black abolitionist activities.

Definition of Abolitionist Party of Canada
Unlike many Canadian social credit parties, the Abolitionists were not social conservatives, advocating, for instance, the legalization of marijuana and gambling.
Turmel founded the Abolitionist Party in 1993 with a similar program to that of the Christian Credit Party.
The Abolitionist Party nominated 80 candidates in the 1993 federal election, who collected only 9,141 votes between them.

Lewis Tappan and the Amistad Case
On this issue the abolitionists intended to rely heavily on the testimony of Madden, but counted also on James Covey, their African-born interpreter.
Even on holidays, Tappan often excused himself to attend to anti-slavery business.
The new Spanish minister to the United States, Pedro Argaiz, angrily protested the arrest of the two Spanish citizens in a letter to pro-slavery Secretary of State John Forsyth.

 Child, Lydia Maria Francis
They continued to contribute liberally, from a small income, to the abolitionist movement.
Child's further abolitionist efforts included editing the National Anti-Slavery Standard (1841-43) and later transcribing the recollections of slaves who had been freed.
Child's best-known work, An Appeal in Favor of that Class of Americans Called Africans (1833), related the history of slavery and denounced the inequality of education and employment for blacks; it was the first such work published in book form.

White and Black Abolitionist Compared; Garrison's "Liberator" & Douglass' "North Star"
In fact, Garrison's Liberator, influenced and even helped Douglass establish himself as an abolitionist.
The Liberator was the official "voice" of the society until it was later replaced by the Abolitionist.
Motivated with the determination that slavery needed to be abolished immediately, Garrison and Douglass both built their paper from scratch and worked endless hours preparing their papers for publications.

From Revolution to Reconstruction: Outlines: American History (1994): Chapter Six: The Abolitionists (4/15)
When the postmaster stated he would not enforce delivery of abolitionist material, bitter debates ensued in Congress.
Other abolitionists, unwilling to subscribe to his law-defying tactics, held that reform should be accomplished by legal and peaceful means.
The number of local antislavery societies increased at such a rate that by 1840 there were about 2,000 with a membership of perhaps 200,000.

He also believed that the U.S. Constitution upheld slavery, for it stated that nonfree individuals (slaves) should be counted as three-fifths of a person in the census figures used for determining a state's share of the national taxes and its number of seats in the House of Representatives.
The American Anti-Slavery Society, of which he was a member, had been formed in 1833.
As a traveling lecturer accompanying other abolitionist agents on tours of the northern states, his job was to talk about his life and to sell subscriptions to the Liberator and another newspaper, the Anti-Slavery Standard.

Abolitionism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A few were willing to use insurrection, as exemplified by the activities of John Brown, but most tried to get legal reform to immediately emancipate slaves, or worked to rescue slaves.
In the United States, abolitionists were involved in the conflict between North and South.
The abolitionism of the mid-nineteenth century was generally close to the era's other influential reform movements, such as the temperance movement, anti-Catholic nativism, public schooling, and prison- and asylum-building.

'Brown' traces abolitionist's path to gallows
What galled abolitionists was that the federal government, rather than discourage slavery, reinforced it.
In 1850, for instance, Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Act, which allowed owners to pursue runaways anywhere in the country.
Most abolitionists were driven more by repugnance over the practice of slavery than by connection to those who were enslaved.

Reader's Companion to American History - -ABOLITIONIST MOVEMENT
Most abolitionists reluctantly supported the Republican party, stood by the Union in the secession crisis, and became militant champions of military emancipation during the Civil War.
Their propounding of these goals distinguished abolitionists from the broad-based political opposition to slavery's westward expansion that took form in the North after 1840 and raised issues leading to the Civil War.
Although historians debate the extent of the abolitionists' influence on the nation's political life after 1840, their impact on northern culture and society is undeniable.

African American Odyssey: Abolition, Anti-Slavery Movements, and the Rise of the Sectional Controversy (Part 1)
Music was one of the most powerful weapons of the abolitionists.
Drafted by William Lloyd Garrison, the declaration pledged its members to work for emancipation through non-violent actions of "moral suasion," or "the overthrow of prejudice by the power of love." The society encouraged public lectures, publications, civil disobedience, and the boycott of cotton and other slave-manufactured products.
Individual abolitionists sometimes advocated violent means for bringing slavery to an end.

Unshackled / Britain's abolitionist triumph was a landmark in social justice movements
The abolitionist movement marked an unprecedented shift in civil society.
Hochschild's dramatic narrative begins with the formation of the original abolitionist committee in 1787 by Thomas Clarkson, a fiery Church of England deacon -- the committee itself becoming a landmark in the history of modern civil society.
Until the late 18th century, when the British slavery abolitionist movement began, the idea of eliminating one of the fundamental aspects of the British Empire's economy was unimaginable.

NodeWorks - Encyclopedia: John Brown (abolitionist)
Franklin Sanborn, secretary for the Massachusetts State Kansas Committee, introduced Brown to several influential abolitionists in the Boston area in January of 1857.
These militias, well established by 1861, were in effect a ready-made Confederate army, making the South more prepared for secession than it otherwise might have been.
Southern slaveowners, fearful that other abolitionists would emulate Brown and attempt to lead slave rebellions, began to organize militias to defend their property (being both their land and their slaves).

AR.net >> David Cantor on Animal Rights Accommodationist vs. Abolitionist Factions
The abolitionists argue that accommodationist efforts are counter-productive, and have little use for groups that try, for example, to improve the conditions used by suppliers to fast food restaurants.
Now if we could only help persuade the bulk of the animal rights movement to adopt the abolitionist pose of Cantor, Joan Dunayer and others, our jobs would be that much easier.
Cantor, not surprisingly, is an abolitionist who thinks accommodationist efforts are a waste of time.
